Order and structure from office to excavation

A biting north wind stings our cheeks as we make our way across the muddy construction site in Ormsta, just north of Stockholm. Here, we have arranged to meet John Sundkvist, Project Manager at GMB Stockholmsschakt AB. Our goal is to gain insight into the company’s day-to-day operations, understand how the business functions in practice, and see how the collaboration with us at MaskinSystem works out in the field.

John greets us with a warm smile and a broad northern Swedish accent. We are quickly welcomed into a cozy, heated site office where he shows us his workspace—neat, structured, and exceptionally organized. It immediately sets the tone.

GMB was founded in 2011 by CEO Sebastian Gifting and has grown steadily ever since, with particularly strong expansion in recent years. Today, the company boasts an impressive fleet of more than 20 machines, including around ten crawler and wheeled excavators, all, of course, equipped with Makin3D.

Business is booming

There is no doubt that John has a full schedule. Business is booming, and the demand for skilled personnel is high. At the same time, he explains how digitalization has simplified everyday work:

“USB drives are a thing of the past. With Makin Cloud, design files and updates are sent automatically. It saves us up to two hours a day,” says John.

Order and structure are among GMB’s core values, and it shows. John’s desk and digital folders are meticulously organized. With an education from the KTH Royal Institute of Technology, the connection is easy to see. This structured approach extends throughout the entire company. Their attention to detail is evident not only in the finished work on site but also from the outset, through carefully prepared calculations that minimize the risk of errors. Employees are continuously kept up to date and actively participate in training programs.

“I can genuinely vouch for their precision,” says Micke, a  project consultant with many years of industry experience. “I’ve rarely come across a company that stays as close to its original cost estimate as GMB does. That’s a major reson why they’re growing and why they’ll remain succesful in this industry for a long time.”

Tommy shows us the latest developments around the foundation slab, where more than 100 new homes are currently taking shape.

GMB’s work, however, extends far beyond residential developments. The company carries out all types of excavation and groundworks, from bulk earthmoving to fine grading and landscaping. It is this latter area, fine grading and landscaping, that John is particularly passionate about. Recently, he has been involved in creating residential courtyards in Solna and the new parks surrounding St. Göran’s Hospital.
